West Ham United Footballers Inspire Students with Healthy Living Campaign

In an exciting collaboration aimed at promoting health and wellness among students, the Lower Academy recently played host to BBC's Match of the Day and West Ham United Footballers, Łukasz Fabiański and Konstantinos Mavropanos, as they filmed a special feature highlighting the school's healthy living campaign.

The visit proved to be an enriching experience for our students, who had the unique opportunity to engage with the professional athletes and gain valuable insights into the importance of nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices.

As part of the day's activities, students interacted with the players, asking questions about their daily routines, and learning firsthand about the consequence of nutrition in athletic performance. Students were encouraged to consider the impact of their dietary choices on their overall health and wellbeing. Łukasz and Konstantinos emphasised the importance of instilling healthy habits from a young age, stressing that good nutrition not only fuels the body but also enhances energy levels and cognitive function.

A highlight of the visit was the chance for students to participate in a hands-on smoothie-making session alongside the Premier League footballers. Guided by West Ham United’s Executive Performance Chef, students learned about incorporating nutritious ingredients into their diets, with a particular emphasis on the significance of a balanced breakfast to kickstart the day.

“It is really important for young people to have positive role models around the school, so actually connecting what is on TV and the Premier League to them in person, is really good to inspire and motivate them.” Madison Hooper, Senior Education Officer West Ham United Foundation.

“I know how to make a healthy smoothie at home and how to keep my diet healthy. I was very excited to meet one of West Ham’s most famous goalkeepers.” Beau.L – Year 9

“West Ham United are a very recognisable organisation and having their presence and branding around our academies really helps to inspire the children. The West Ham Foundation have been instrumental in developing healthy eating programmes in the school.” Gary Smith, CEO The Basildon Academies Trust

The visit was part of the Premier League Inspires programme and organised in conjunction with the West Ham United Foundation, who currently work with our students, delivering 1:1 mentoring sessions.
